BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Marshall softball team won both of its games on Saturday at the Camel Stampede. The Herd defeated the Howard Bison 9-2 and then took down the Campbell Camels 6-3.

Marshall's final game on Sunday against Kent State has been canceled due to incoming inclement weather. The Thundering Herd finish the weekend with a 3-1 record and improve to 8-5 overall.

Game One: Marshall 9, Howard 2
The Herd took advantage of 15 combined free passes with 10 walks and five hit-by-pitches to go along with six hits for the win. Freshman Bub Feringa received her first career start in the circle and earned her first career win.

The scoring started slowly for Marshall with one run each in the first, fourth and fifth innings before piling on five runs in the top of the seventh.

Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell led off the game with her first of three walks. Senior Mya Stevenson drew a walk followed by fifth-year senior Saige Pye getting on board with an infield single. With the bases loaded, fifth-year senior Katie Adams picked up the third walk of the inning that drove Harrell home.

In the fourth, Harrell led off with her second walk of the game and redshirt freshman Amaya Lee entered to pinch run at first. Lee advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Lauren Love and then scored on an error in right, off the bat of Pye. Marshall led 2-0.

The Herd increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Feringa, who also bat in the lineup, led off the inning with a double to left. Feringa later scored on another Howard error.

In the fifth inning, Stevenson led off with her second walk of the game. Pye reached on her second hit-by-pitch and then freshman Rielly Lucas drew a walk to load the bases. Feringa flied out to right allowing Stevenson to score from third on a sacrifice fly.

The Bison finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Feringa pitched into the sixth, but did not record an out as Howard tallied three-straight base hits. Redshirt junior Sydney Nester came on in relief, tallying back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Marshall led 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, Harrell got the inning going with her third walk and then Love joined her on base with another walk. Two batters later, with two away, Pye belted a towering shot over the fence in left for a 3-run homer. The Herd did not stop there as Adams was plunked, and then raced home on a single to right by Lucas that was misplayed by the right-fielder and rolled all the way to the fence. Lucas stopped at third. Freshman Brooklyn Ulrich drew a walk in her first career at bat and later stole second. On the play, an errant throw in the infield allowed Lucas to score from third.

Nester closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning and back-to-back strikeouts for the final two outs.

Six different players drew a walk for the Herd with Harrell, Stevenson and Adams recording more than one. Pye finished the game with four RBI and reached base safely all four times that she came to the plate.

Feringa finished the day with five innings pitched, allowed five hits, two runs and struck out two. Nester tossed the last two innings and had four strikeouts.

Game Two: Marshall 6, Campbell 3
The Herd capped the day with another win, this time over the home team. Sydney Nester earned her fifth win of the year and struck out 13 batters, her fifth game in nine appearances with double-digit strikeouts.

Aly Harrell started the game with a walk, her seventh of the weekend and 142nd of her career. Harrell needs six more walks to break the Marshall all-time record for career walks of 147 set by four-time All-American Rachel Folden (2005-08). Saige Pye kept the inning going with a double to center. Two batters later, with two outs, Katie Adams ripped a double to right-center that scored both Harrell and Pye.

Nester began her outing striking out the side in the bottom of the first.

Marshall added one more run in the second inning. Senior Camryn Michallas hit a one-out double to left-center. Freshman Alex Coleman reached on an infield error and then Harrell, finally with a chance to hit, singled to drive home Michallas.

Campbell scored one run in the bottom of the second and another in the third to make it a one-run ball game, 3-2.

The Herd pulled back out to a three-run lead in the fifth. Lauren Love smacked a double to lead off and then Pye cranked another home run to left. The two-run shot was the 19th of her collegiate career, and 18th in her time with Marshall.

Harrell drove in sophomore Autumn Owen with a single to center in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

Campbell scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on base before Marshall recorded the final out on a grounder to Harrell at first base.

Harrell finished the game with two hits and two RBI. The Gahanna, Ohio, native has 140 career RBI, fifth all-time in team history, and is still tops at Marshall with a career on-base percentage of .550.

Pye tallied two hits and two RBI.

Nester has 81 strikeouts through her first nine appearances and 47.2 innings pitched. The Hillsville, Virginia, native has a 1.32 ERA and an opponent batting average of .179.
