Middle Tennessee Free Throw Shooting Hurts Herd in Road Loss

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (11-18, 4-12 C-USA) fell on the road to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (21-7, 12-3 C-USA), 74-65, on Thursday night at the Murphy Center. Middle Tennessee went 32-for-35 from the free throw line.
"This is the elite team in the eastern division," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said of the Blue Raiders. "They shot 35 free throws. We shot 12. We turned the ball over I don't know how many times. We hurt ourselves. We are not disciplined in a lot of things, but it's promising because we are beating ourselves. We are staying there to win games. All we have to do is clean up half of them (the mistakes)."
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor poured in a game-high 24 points. The guard made eight of his 17 shots from the field, including 4-for-8 from three-point range.
Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen followed with 14 points on a 6-for-8 night from the field to go with eight rebounds.
Junior Taevion Kinsey and Mikel Beyers each had 10 points. Beyers grabbed a season-high nine boards.
Taylor came out of the gate and hit the first two shots of the game from three-point range, giving Marshall a 6-0 lead.
After the Blue Raiders tallied the next five points, Anochili-Killen answered with a 5-0 streak to give the Herd an 11-5 advantage at the 15:56 mark. Six minutes later, the visitors used an 8-2 run to grab an eight-point lead, 21-13, its largest of the contest.
MT put eight consecutive points on the scoreboard to tie the game, 21-21, with 5:28 remaining in the first half. Marshall led by three points at halftime, 27-24, after scoring the final four points in the opening stanza.
The Herd extended its lead to eight, 34-26, by outscoring the hosts 7-2 in the opening minutes of the second half.
Middle Tennessee took advantage of a cold streak by Marshall as it went on a 19-2 run from 16:45 to 12:14 to lead 45-36. However, the Green and White was not ready to give up yet. It slowly cut into the Blue Raider lead until Beyers and Taylor took the Herd on a 6-0 run to tie the contest, 61-61, with 1:19 to go.
MT, though, outscored MU 13-4 in the final minute of play as Marshall fell on the road.
NOTES
The Herd made a three in its 999th consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.
Kinsey has scored 10 or more points in 60 of his last 61 games.
Taylor has tallied at least 10 points in his last 10 games The native of Corbin, Kentucky, has scored at least 20 points in seven games this season.
MU won the battle in the paint 34-28.
Beyers has tallied 10 or more points in four of the last five games.
