Herd Men Fall on Senior Day to Hilltoppers

3/2/2022 10:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (11-19, 4-13 C-USA) fell on Senior Day to the WKU Hilltoppers (18-12, 10-7 C-USA), 86-72, in the Cam Henderson Center on Wednesday night.

"We came out and played really good basketball for about six minutes," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "It could be the substitutions because right when we substituted they took off. I'm trying to get a handle on it because we do things that I don't know where they come from."

Seniors Mikel Beyers and Darius George along with junior Taevion Kinsey were honored during the pregame ceremony on Senior Day.

Kinsey poured a team-high 24 points through the hoop to go with six rebounds and five assists.

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor added 18 points and five assists on a 7-for-13 shooting night.

Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Hilltopper guard Camron Justice tallied a game-high 27 points as he made 12 of his 15 shots from the field. Center Jamarion Sharp recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while rejecting five shots.

Beyers hit the opening shot of the game from behind-the-arc as the two sides traded baskets and the lead for the first eight minutes of the contest.

WKU went on a 15-3 run to grab a 10-point lead, 31-21, at the 7:05 mark. It scored 10 of the final 12 points in the half as Marshall trailed 43-28 at the break.

Much like the beginning of the second half, the two squads traded runs during the first four minutes of the final 20 minutes. However, the Herd used a 10-0 advantage from the 14:59 mark to 12:42 to cut the deficit to seven points, 54-47.

The Hilltoppers used four runs of at least five points in the final 12 minutes of the game to regain its double-digit advantage and hold off Marshall down the stretch.
