Herd competes in Huntington next weekend

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Ashonti Warner and Itzel Santos both posted victories and Abby Herring set a 3,000-meter school record for Marshall's indoor track and field team Saturday at the Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va. The meet was held at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Warner won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.56 seconds, one hundredth of a second faster than Campbell's Jamiah Jackson.
Warner also placed second in the 400 meters in a time of 57.02 seconds. Erica Murphy (fourth, 57.76) and Jillian King (seventh, 58.04) also posted top-seven performances.
Santos found a win for Marshall in the 800 meters (2:16.12) and Mikah Alleyne wound up second in the 200 meters in 24.90 seconds.
Herring's record (9:59.78) was good for second, ahead of Sydney Smith's fourth-place finish (10:16.33). Kalei Jordan also set a personal best when she finished eighth in 10:44.35.
Marshall went 3-4-5 in the 5,000 meters with Kyleigh Edwards leading the way in 18:19.73, followed by Julia Muller (18:52.88) and Cari Hively (19:22.60). Edwards' time was the third-fastest in Conference USA this season.
MaryAnn Adebayo paced the team in the weight throw (fourth, 17.71 meters) and Maria Parra (fifth, 5.53 meters) led the way in the long jump. Adebayo also took sixth in the shot put (12.70 meters).
Macie Majoy placed sixth in the pole vault (3.82 meters).
Meagan Ward (13th, 5:25.47) and Erykah Christopher (14th, 5:33.18) represented the Thundering Herd in the mile run.
Krista Perry was MU's best high jumper with a mark of 1.46 meters (16th).
The Herd's 4x400 relay team of Perry, Astoria Beckett, Marlee Porter and Erica Murphy took third place in a time of 3:58.79.
MU will return to Huntington to compete in the Marshall Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Jeff Small Track inside the Chris Cline Indoor Athletics Complex. Friday's action will get underway at 6:30 p.m. with the field events, while Saturday's slate set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
The program will honor its seniors at a ceremony scheduled to begin at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Saturday.
