ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall softball team saw its winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, falling 8-7 to the Ohio Bobcats.
Â
The Herd had previously won 11-straight, third-longest streak in team history and longest since winning 17 in-a-row in 2017.
Â
The Thundering Herd is now 16-6 overall while the Bobcats improve to 6-12.
Â
Marshall tallied 11 hits in the game, the fifth-straight game that the Herd has put up double-digit hits. The last time Marshall had a streak of 5-straight was May 3-9, 2014. It is also tied for the second-longest run since 2000. The record of six in-a-row was also accomplished in 2014, taking place April 2-9.
Â
The Herd scored first in the top of the first inning. Senior Mya Stevenson got it started with a two-out, solo home run to left for her sixth of the season and 46th of her career. Marshall then loaded the bases on three-straight walks with freshman Lauren Love, sophomore Autumn Owen and freshman Bub Feringa drawing the free passes. Fifth-year senior Katie Adams was then hit by a pitch that scored Love. The Herd led 2-0.
Â
The game was a defensive duel for the next few innings as both teams got players on base but could not find the timely hit.
Â
Marshall scored three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Kay Kay Kenney led off the inning with a base hit, followed by a walk to Adams, and then senior Grace Chelemen loaded the bases with a single. Two batters later, fifth-year senior Aly Harrell plated Kenney with a single to center. With the bases still loaded, fifth-year senior Saige Pye drew a walk that scored Adams. Stevenson then drove a pitch into left that sent Chelemen home.
Â
Ohio scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to get on the scoreboard. Marshall added two more runs in the sixth as Adams scored on an infield error, and then Chelemen crossed the plate on another RBI single from Harrell.
Â
The Bobcats took the momentum in the bottom of the sixth scoring four runs to cut the deficit to two, 7-5. Ohio finished the game with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Â
Redshirt junior Sydney Nester got the start in the circle and pitched six innings, allowing 10 hits, five runs and struck out eight. Sophomore Brianna McCown came in to start the seventh and recorded one out while walking two batters. Feringa then entered to pitch and faced two batters, recording one out, before Ohio got the walkoff.
Â
Harrell reached base four times in the game with two hits and two hit-by-pitches. She also drove in two runs. Pye, Stevenson, and Chelemen all had two hits each. Along with two hits, Pye drew two walks. Chelemen also reached on a walk. Adams reached base safely four times with one hit, two walks and one hit-by-pitch. Love continued her hitting streak to seven games with a base hit and also tallied two walks.
Â
Marshall begins Conference USA play on March 18-20 at UAB. The three-game series will take place with one game per day from Friday through Sunday. The Herd's first game against the Blazers is set for Friday at 6 p.m. CT/7 p.m. ET.
