Junior shot a 10-under 62, breaks Herd record set in 1958

Final Results

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Marshall men's golf junior Tyler Jones set a team record with a 10-under 62 in the final round of the Golfweek Any Given Tuesday (AGT) Intercollegiate and tied for the win on Wednesday. Jones broke the Marshall single-round record of 63, scored by Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Linden Meade in the MAC Championship on May 23, 1958.

The Thundering Herd tied for fifth overall and had the second-best team score of 6-under 282 in the final round. Jones shared the win with Zack Byers of Gardner-Webb. It was the first collegiate win for Jones.

"That was one of the best experiences I have had as a coach," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "That was the best round I have ever watched. Tyler (Jones) played flawless today and was in complete control. It was his first collegiate win and his first bogey free round as well.

"As a team, I was very pleased with the way we played this week. I saw a lot of good things out of the guys. Tyler continues to impress every week and is always near the top of the leaderboard. Joseph's (Kalaskey) 70 today was very impressive. Ryan (Bilby) played consistently all week and is very close to playing great golf. Brett (Montgomery) played really solid golf in stretches and will get more consistent. Noah (Mullens) had a wonderful attitude this week and I expect good things out of him in this next event. Kyle (Mitchell) played well today and really looked pretty good this week.

"We can't wait to get to Irish Creek and getting back to competing."

Jones began the day tied for sixth with an even par, 144. The Westerville, Ohio, native started the third round on No. 15 and immediately scored his first birdie. He then sank three-straight birdies on No. 18 and then Nos. 1 and 2. Jones scored back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5 and finished the front-nine at 6-under, five strokes behind Byers who started the day with the lead at minus-6 and had worked his way to 11-under for the tournament.

Once Jones made it to the back-nine, he scored birdies on four of his final five holes closing the gap. Byers scored a bogey on his final hole of the day on No. 12, dropping him from 11-under to 10-under par, and tied with Jones atop the leaderboard. Jones improved his score by 11 strokes from the second round. Jones led the field with 18 total birdies and scored par or better on 46-of-54 holes.

Jones had finished second at the Sea Palms Invitational (March 4-5), and third overall at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate (March 14-15). He was just one shot behind the two players who finished tied for the lead at the Bobby Nichols and then had a playoff.

The closest a Marshall men's golfer had come to Meade's team record was Alex Weiss on Sept. 12, 2017, with a 6-under 65 in the second round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. Meade won the MAC Tournament in 1958, earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He was inducted into the Marshall Hall of Fame in 1991.

Helping lead the Herd through the great third round was also a tremendous finish from redshirt freshman Joseph Kalaskey. He scored a 2-under 70, collecting five birdies on Wednesday, on the way to improving his score by seven strokes and moving up 11 spots on the leaderboard. Kalaskey sank three-straight birdies on holes 9-11.

Fellow redshirt freshman Brett Montgomery dropped his score by eight strokes from the second round and had three birdies on Wednesday. Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens and freshman Ryan Bilby had one birdie each. Senior Kyle Mitchell, playing as an individual tallied three birdies and finished with a 2-over 74.

The Herd's golfers collected a grand total of 48 birdies throughout the tournament.

Charleston Southern won the event by one stroke over Gardner-Webb.
