Stefancic seals win for Marshall
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The 11th-seeded Marshall University tennis team (13-12) advanced to the 2022 Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals with a 4-2 triumph over the sixth-seeded Southern Miss Golden Eagles (12-5) on Thursday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
"We fought hard," Herd tennis head coach John Mercer said. "Our competitive schedule really paid off for us. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
Marshall worked quickly in doubles as Madi Ballow and Sophia Hurrion picked up a 6-2 win over Suhana Das and Clara Tardievel on court two. Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte soon followed to take the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter on court three.
Emma Vanderheyden carried the Herd's momentum into singles as the freshman took her match over Yagan, 6-4, 6-2, on court one. Clairotte then took her contest over Richter on court six, 6-4, 6-1.
After McGrane and Ballow suffered losses on courts four and three, respectively, Liz Stefancic sealed the match for the Green and White with a three-set win, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, over Sarah Medik.
