BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Marshall University baseball team (17-21-1, 6-10 C-USA) took a 2-1 decision over the WKU Hilltoppers (13-24, 4-12 C-USA) on Friday night in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Herd starting pitcher Jeffrey Purnell picked up his fifth win of the season.
Â
"It was great to see Jeff settle in and shutdown their (WKU's) offense for seven innings," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the win. "We played very good defense and got big RBIs from (Jordon) Billups and (Kyle) Schaefer. We moved Capuano to the closer role and he was able to finish the game. It was an all-around great game on both sides for us. We need to be ready to go tomorrow to try and win the series."
Â
Purnell walked the first three batters he faced to start his outing, but caught the leadoff man Tristin Garcia stealing and got Justin Carlin to ground into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play to close out the opening frame.
Â
The Hilltoppers scored the first run of the game on a Ty Crittenberger single as Marshall trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
Â
After allowing six base runners in the first two frames, Purnell settled in. The senior hurled 1-2-3 bottom of the third and fourth innings. The righty then worked around a single in the fifth to throw a scoreless frame.
Â
In the top of the sixth, Daniel Carinci led off with a ground-rule double down the right-field line. Luke Edwards followed with a single to center to move Carinci to third. The junior extended his hit streak 13 games and his on-base streak to 47 games with the base knock.
Â
After Ryan Leitch struck out, Jordon Billups sent the first pitch of his at bat to right center for a double, tying the game as Carinci scored and Edwards moved to third with one out. Kyle Schaefer lined out to left, but Billups scored on the sacrifice fly to give Marshall a 2-1 lead.
Â
Purnell then gave up singles again in the sixth and seventh innings, but held WKU scoreless as he finished his outing. He went 7.0 innings of work, giving up just one run on six hits and three walks while striking out five Hilltoppers.
Â
Ryan Capuano came on for Purnell to begin the bottom of the eighth. After giving up a leadoff single, the Canadian righty recorded six consecutive outs en route to his first save of the season in the Herd victory.
