Edwards extends on-base streak to 54 games

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Marshall University baseball team (19-25-1, 8-14 C-USA) fell to the UTSA Roadrunners (31-15, 15-7 C-USA), 6-3, in the series opener on Friday night in San Antonio, Texas.

Herd starting pitcher Jeffrey Purnell began his outing by working around a one-out double and hit batter by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the bottom of the first.

UTSA struck for four two-out runs in the bottom of the second, including a three-RBI double by Josh Killeen, to take a 4-0 lead.

With a double down the left field line in the top of the third, Luke Edwards extended his on-base streak to 54 games.

Ian Bailey led off the bottom of the third with a homer as Marshall trailed 5-0.

After Purnell threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth with a pair of strikeouts, his offense picked him up with a couple of runs the next half inning. Geordon Blanton led off the fifth with a walk. Travis Sankovich followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and a Roadrunner error allowed Blanton to reach third. Two batters later Edwards fouled out to right, but Blanton crossed home on the sacrifice fly. Ryan Leitch then singled to left, scoring Sankovich to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Purnell settled in facing the minimum in the fifth and sixth while stranding a pair of UTSA runners in the seventh inning.

Cole Agemy came on from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the eighth. Agemy quickly record the first two outs with a double play, but allowed a runner to score on a wild pitch later in the inning as the Roadrunners extended their advantage to 6-2.

Blanton led off the ninth with a walk. Sankovich and Jordon Billups each followed with singles to center to load the bases with no outs. Edwards collected his second RBI of the contest with a single through the left side to keep the bases loaded with no outs and making the score 6-3. However, UTSA set down the next three batters as the Herd fell in game one.
