Yosef Hat-Trick, Stout Defense Propels No. 14 Men’s Soccer to Shutout of VCU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Milo Yosef recorded a hat-trick, defense allowed no shots on goal in the No. 14 Marshall University men's soccer team's (1-0-0) shutout of the VCU Rams (0-1-0) in its 2022 season opener on Thursday night at Hoops Family Field.
The five-goal margin of victory is the largest the program has had in a season opener since a 6-0 defeat of Georgetown College in 1989.
"It (Our performance) was very good from minute one, all the way through," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said about the win. "That was a tremendous performance."
The Herd didn't take long to get on the board. Just 2:31 into the match, graduate student Vinicius Fernandes sent a pass into the center of the 18-yard box to Yosef, who put the ball just underneath the crossbar and into the goal for the first tally in the contest.
"I'm just happy we won our first game," Yosef said. "It was our first test. Coach (Grassie) prepared us for the game perfectly. I guess it's just a bonus that I scored three goals."
With just under four minutes remaining in the first half, Joao Souza sent a cross from the left side of the 18-yard box. Yosef was waiting near the right post and volleyed the ball into the back of the net to put MU up 2-0 with his second goal in the contest.
Marshall finished the first half with 17 shots, including five on goal, as it led 2-0 at halftime.
At the 56:30 mark, freshman Matthew Bell drew a foul inside the 18-yard box for a Marshall penalty kick. Souza stepped to the spot and buried the attempt into the left side of the net and just past the keeper to give the Green and White a three-goal advantage, 3-0.
Eight minutes later, Ibrahima Diop sent in a cross that found Yosef. The German forward sent the pass home with a right-footed volley for the first hat-trick of his career.
The scoring wasn't over for the Herd as Fernandes sent a cross into the middle of the 18-yard box. The midfielder's pass found Bell's head. The Jamaican put the ball into the net to make it 5-0 Marshall as the freshman scored in his collegiate debut.
NOTES
Yosef recorded the sixth multi-goal match of his career. With the three goals, he now has 22 in his career and sits in sole possession of seventh most in program history after coming into the contest tied with Jamil Roberts at 19.
The forward also has 58 career points, tied with Roberts for seventh most in program history. His eight total shots and five attempts on goal in the victory are both career highs.
Graduate student goalkeeper Oliver Semmle recorded the 20th shutout in his career. He is two away from surpassing Daniel Withrow for the most in program history.
The Herd outshot the Rams 34-2, including 13-0 in shots on goal. Both of the Rams attempts came in the first half.
