Seven-Goal Performance Powers No. 8 Herd Men’s Soccer Over Pacific

Bell, Holmes each score two goals
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 8 Marshall University men's soccer team (4-1-0) exploded for a season-high seven goals in a 7-1 victory over the Pacific Tigers (1-4-1) on Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
"It was a very impressive response after halftime. We challenged the guys to step up their intensity. It was a hot and humid day today, and I felt we were too comfortable with clearly being the better team," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said after winning his 60th contest at Marshall. "No disrespect to Pacific, they play a lovely possession game, but they played on Friday and might not have had enough subs today to keep going. In the second half, our intensity was through the roof. That's what we need to do to be champions."
The Herd did not wait long to get on the board. Senior Joao Souza sent a pass to graduate student Vinicius Fernandes on the right wing, who crossed the ball into the 18-yard box and found freshman Ryan Holmes. Holmes, a native of Ona, then slotted home the first goal of his career just 2:17 into the match.
The Tigers tied contest, 1-1 on a goal by Cooper Riley from just outside the 18-yard box in the 13th minute.
After that it was all Marshall. Junior Adam Aoumaich sent in a cross and found Holmes who tallied his second goal of the game in 19th minute.
"As you could tell from the celebration, you could tell I was really surprised. I didn't think I was going to score, but it was a team-effort and a team-win today," Holmes said after the win.
11 minutes later, Pacific goalkeeper Eric Cotton sent a clearance off Souza and the ball found its way into the Tigers' goal for the Brazilian's third of the season.
Sophomore Kenzo Brito joined in the scoring with just over minute remaining in the first half as he notched his first goal of the season on assists by graduate student Ibrahima Diop and redshirt junior Adam Lubell.
The Herd held a lead 4-1 at the half.
Just over seven minutes into the second period, sophomore Agustin Iusem tallied the fifth Marshall goal of the contest, his first of the of the season, after a shot by Diop was blocked on a cross from senior Alexander Adjetey off the left wing.
The Herd was not done quite yet as freshman Matthew Bell scored a pair of goals in the span of just under four minutes to give the Herd a six-goal advantage, 7-1, on his fifth and team-leading sixth goals of the season. Aoumaich assisted on the goal in the 70th minute as Lubell was credited with the helper in the 74th as Bell deflected Lubell's shot from about 23-yards away from goal into the back of the net.
"I didn't score in the first half. I was disappointed in myself, but to comeback in the second half (and score two goals), I'm proud of myself," Bell said of his performance.
The Marshall defense allowed zero shots in the second half.
"I love going there (to Lexington). We're two different teams in terms of style, but they're a very good team. They've been with us the last few years. They won the Conference USA Championship last year and we won it the two years before that. It's going to be a heck of game," Grassie said about the upcoming Sun Belt Conference opener at Kentucky on Friday.
NOTES
The seven goals are the most in a game since MU tallied 10 on Feb. 21, 2021, against West Virginia Tech at Hoops Family Field.
Aoumaich, Diop and Lubell each had two assists in the victory.
Bell recorded his second multi-goal performance of the season as it was Holmes first.
