Volleyball Falls in Sun Belt Opener at ODU

Macy McElhaney recorded 500th kill in her collegiate career

NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (6-6, 0-1 Sun Belt) fell in its Sun Belt Conference opener (25-13, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23) in Norfolk, Virginia, to the ODU Monarchs (6-8, 1-0 Sun Belt) on Thursday night. Graduate student Macy McElhaney recorded the 500th kill in her collegiate career.
McElhaney had a double-double in the contest with 16 kills and a team-high 12 digs. Sophomore Brynn Brown collected her seventh double-double of the season with 34 assists and 11 digs.
Senior Lydia Montague had a team-high 17 kills and three blocks to go with a .538 hitting percentage.
After the Herd dropped the opening set 25-13, the second set was a see-saw battle. It featured six lead changes and saw the score tied 16 times. ODU held the largest lead of the set with score 20-16. However, Marshall tallied seven of the next 10 points, including a pair of kills by Macy McElhaney, along with kills by Brown and Montague, to knot the score at 23 all. Then a kill by redshirt junior Olivia Fogo and a service ace by freshman Eden McElhaney, clinched the set 27-25 for Marshall.
The two squads traded off the first 20 points of the third set. Macy McElhaney then collected the 500th kill in her collegiate career to give the Herd an 11-10 lead. After the score was tied 15-15, the Monarchs took control of the frame and took the third set 25-20.
In the fourth set, no side led by more than three points, but ODU closed out the match by taking the set with a narrow 25-23 margin.

The Herd closes its opening Sun Belt Conference weekend with another matchup against the Monarchs at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Norfolk.
