Box Score
JONESBORO, ARK. – A late winner for the Arkansas State Red Wolves aided the hosts to a 3-2 win over the Marshall women's soccer team Thursday afternoon. Bailey Fisher and Luiza Travassos scored for Marshall in the loss.
Marshall weathered the early storm on an overcast afternoon at A-State Soccer Park in Jonesboro with starting goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth making two saves in the first ten minutes. The hosts would strike first, however, in the 12th minute when Darby Stotts scored off a ball placed in the box by a free kick from midfield.
Wolgemuth made her biggest save of the first half denying Stotts her chance at a second goal in the 25th minute. The freshman made four first-half saves.
The Herd picked up the intensity in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, gathering several chances, including a Kat Gonzalez shot from 25 yards out that was just off target. The hosts outshot Coach Swan's side 9-4 in the opening half, but Marshall remained within reach thanks to Wolgemuth and the defensive effort from the MU back line.
Marshall continued the pressure in the second half, collecting the second half's first four shots. The persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Hurricane native, Bailey Fisher netted her first goal of the season. The loose ball in the box caromed perfectly to Fisher who calmly finished to level the scoring. Morgan White added her first assist of the season.
Following a back and forth affair, the hosts were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, leading to the go ahead goal for A-State in the 70th minute.
Moments later, Wolgemuth came up big once more on a counter attack, deflecting a shot destined for the top shelf. The MU keeper from Lincolnton, N.C. finished the match with a six-save performance.
Throwing numbers forward, a foul in the box allowed Marshall a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Sophomore Luiza Travassos stepped up, calmly finishing from the spot to equalize the match at 2-2.
Less than two minutes later, the hosts would go back in front, this time for good on a loose ball in the Marshall box. A-State's leading scorer Emma Riley netted the winner for the hosts.
The loss drops Marshall to 1-6-2 (0-2 SBC). Arkansas State moves to 3-4-2 (1-1 SBC).
"We have a big sense of hurt right now, but we have to dust ourselves down and regroup," Marshall head women's soccer coach Michael Swan said. "We have to show the same belief and we've had for a long period of games this season and play a whole 90 minutes."
