White scores a pair in team’s first SBC victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va – The Marshall University women's soccer team has battled its share of adversity this season. Despite the challenges, head coach Michael Swan has remained optimistic, preaching the team's cohesiveness, while acknowledging the need to finish matches.
His team did just that on Sunday at Hoops Family Field in a massive 3-2 victory over Appalachian State.
Down a player, and having already squandered a 2-0 lead, the Thundering Herd fought through the obstacles, securing its first Sun Belt Conference victory following a late Morgan White goal in the 87th minute.
"The girls just decided to go for it," Swan said. "They decided to link their arms together, move forward, listen, drive, win the 50-50 challenges, take it to the opponent, and score goals. My goodness they did that today. A win like that galvanizes you, it gives you belief, it gives you a sense that the world is not out to get you and one thing it does more than anything is that it brings you together."
Marshall outplayed the visitors in the first half, outshooting the Mountaineers 5-3, winning the corner count 3-0, and gathering 56 percent of the possession. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when senior midfielder Kat Gonzalez found White on a beautiful through ball that the Herd's leading goal scorer finished to give the hosts the 1-0 halftime lead.
Marshall struck again in the second half, when sophomore midfielder Courtney Corcoran scored directly off a free-kick 20 yards out. Corcoran's second of the year in the 55th minute was a driven ball into traffic that hammered past the App State keeper, giving the home side a multi-goal advantage.
Then the aforementioned adversity struck.
In a five minute span, the Mountaineers tied the match with consecutive goals in the 59th and 60th minutes. Marshall also went down a player due to a second yellow card, forcing Marshall to play with 10 for the final half hour.
Instead of giving in, Marshall stayed strong and "went for it" as Coach Swan said. The Herd outshot App State 6-2 in the final 30 minutes, continuing to dominate the corner count, 3-1, and maintaining an even control of possession.
The winning sequence came as Gonzalez from the top of the box sent a volley over to White once more. The leading goal scorer found a way to place the bouncing ball past the App State keeper, sending the home crowd into excitement. Marshall held on to a 3-2 thrilling victory. It is a win that White and the team understands, will only help them moving forward.
"It is a big boost for us," White said, who now has eight goals on the season. "It is a win we really needed, it's been one we have been waiting on."
"I feel like winning is a habit," sophomore midfielder Luiza Travassos added. "And now after having this one, we can continue to go get more."
