HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball (1-0) opened the 2023-24 regular season with an 89-73 win over the Queens University of Charlotte Royals (0-1) in the Cam Henderson Center Monday night.
"It's always good to get the first one," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "We had two exhibitions, but this is a much better ball club. They (Queens) had good talent out there. They're fast. They play at our pace. I thought we played hard and together."
The Herd's newcomers played a big role in the victory as Kevon Voyles led the way with 18 points to go with six boards, five assists and three steals. Nate Martin fell a rebound shy of a double with 15 points and nine rebounds as Cameron Crawford tallied 14 points on a 5-for-8 night from the field.
Kamdyn Curfman and Obinna Anochili-Killen followed with 15 and 14 points, respectively, as MU had five with 10 or more points in the season opener.
Marshall got off to a hot start. It quickly jumped out to a 21-point lead, 31-10, in the first 11 minutes of the contest. This came as a result of a 19-3 run from the 15:46 mark to 9:15, seeing six different players put the ball through the basket.
The Herd made 48.6 percent (36-of-74) of its shots from the field, including 51.4 (18-for-35) in the second half of play.
Wyatt Fricks nearly made it six players with 10 or more points at nine, but played a big factor on the defensive end with three steals and three blocks. Marshall's defense caused Queens havoc holding the visitors to just 38.6 percent (27-of-70) from the field, including 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from behind the arc.
