Jones’ 67 nets T-6 finish; Marshall ties for best team round on final day
BALTIMORE, Md. – Marshall senior Tyler Jones shot a final day 67 to lead Marshall's team to a fourth-place finish at the Loyola Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Palm Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Maryland.
As a team, Marshall posted a 276 on the day, which was tied for the best round out of any team competing. That vaulted them from sixth to fourth in the final standings.
Much of that success was the team's ability to minimize mistakes on par-3s throughout the tournament. Marshall tied for the best team stroke average on par-3s in the tournament.
"I am so happy for the guys!" Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "They have worked so hard and to see all that hard work pay off was great."
For the second straight day, Marshall finished with five guys at Even or better with four players netting at least four birdies on the day.
That effort was led by Jones, who finished with six birdies and one bogey in his round to finish the tournament tied for sixth at 7-under.
Ryan Bilby continued his strong play as well, carding a 3-under 69 on Tuesday on the strength of five birdies and two bogeys. Bilby finished the tournament at 4-under.
"Tyler played so well. His 67 was impressive and honestly, could have been even lower," Grobe said. "Ryan played well all week and I really like how he is playing."
Christian Boyd shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, using four birdies and one bogey to vault into the red and finish at 1-under for the tournament.
Joseph Kalaskey also saw red numbers in his final round, finishing with a 71 to record his best round of the week.
Marshall will look to continue the momentum of this week's result as they prepare for their next tournament – the Sea Palms Invitational, which is hosted by Western Carolina from March 9-11.
"We are looking forward to getting home and getting some practice to get ready for St. Simons Island," Grobe said.
