BOONE, N.C — The Marshall softball team (22-3, 1-0 SBC) opened league play with an 8-0 win over App State (15-7, 0-1 SBC) Saturday afternoon. 

Pitcher Sydney Nester shut out the Mountaineer offense, earning her 14th win of the year in a complete-game performance. The Hillsville, Va. native scattered six hits while striking out four.

The Herd exploded with four runs in the 5th, and two more in the 6th to break open what started as a duel between Nester and App State's ace. Junior Autumn Owen's league-leading 13th home run of the year capped off the Marshall mid-game rally. 

Sydney Bickel scored on Owen's first RBI knock in the 5th. Bickel scored the Herd's first run in the 1st on a Grace Chelemen opposite field rip. 

Bickel, the shortstop from Peoria, Ariz. twice ended an App rally with a pair of defensive stops from the six spot. 

Brooklyn Ulrich, Bub Feringa, and Camryn Michallas each drove in runs as well to score the eight for Coach Megan Smith Lyon's team Saturday.   

UP NEXT

The Herd finished a perfect weekend with just one game in Boone over the weekend. Marshall will play a midweek doubleheader in Louisville against UT Martin and the hosts, Bellarmine on Wednesday, March 22.
