Marshall Softball Sweeps Morehead on Home Opening Day

Brooklyn Ulrich hits first career home run for Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall softball team (13-3) dominated its home opening day Thursday, sweeping the Morehead State Eagles with consecutive 9-1 victories.

The Herd were led by a pair of one-hit complete games from Sydney Nester and Savannah Rice. Nester leads the nation in innings pitched (63.2), and is the Sun Belt leader in wins (8) and strikeouts (82).

The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Autumn Owen hit her ninth home run of the year. Grace Chelemen, Bub Feringa, and Brooklyn Ulrich went deep as well. For Ulrich, it was her first long ball as a member of the Thundering Herd

The Herd broke through in the 4th when Ulrich queued a liner off the first base bag to score Chelemen for an RBI hit. Marshall scored three more on a pair of walks and an Owen sacrifice fly in the inning.

The lead would be plenty for redshirt-senior Sydney Nester, who earned her Sun Belt-leading eighth win in the circle. The Hillsville, Va. native tossed her third one-hitter of 2023.

With the Herd up seven, Feringa's home run in the bottom of the 6th sealed the Marshall win. The sophomore from Glendale, Ariz. has 20 RBI on the season.

Second Game: Marshall 9, Morehead State 1, (5 Innings)

Savannah Rice earned her fourth win in as many decisions for Marshall in the second game. The junior from Marshall, N.C. retired the Eagles in order for the first three innings, striking out seven of the first nine batters.

Feringa picked back up in the second game where she left off, with an RBI bunt single down the third base line to score Alex Coleman. Feringa's steal for second on the next pitch would allow Sydney Bickel to dash home and score Marshall's second run of the 1st.

Seven runs in total over the first two innings greeted MSU in the second game as Marshall swept the doubleheader with its second 9-1 win of the day.
