Herd Back on Track With Road Win Over Morehead

Pitcher Savannah Rice strikes out a season-high 11 in win.
MOREHEAD, Ky. — On a day in which Autumn Owen tied the Marshall softball program record for RBI in a season with 60, the Thundering Herd returned to the win column with a 4-2 victory over the Morehead State Eagles.
Coach Megan Smith Lyon's side is now 34-4 and 9-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. Â
"I think it was good for us to come out today and get back on track," Smith Lyon said. "I think we were a little stale offensively that last day in Monroe, and we still have some kinks to get worked out offensively but it was good to get out here again and watch our players compete."
Owen's RBI single scored Alex Coleman in the 1st on a sunny afternoon in Morehead. Her RBI groundout in the 3rd following a Sydney Bickel triple tied the historic mark from Rachel Folden set in 2005.
Savannah Rice was masterful in the circle, pitching a complete-game performance for her 10th win of the year. The junior struck out a season-high 11 while walking none.
The lone blemish was a two-run blast in the 3rd to level the game for the hosts.Â
The Herd regained the advantage in the 5th with a Bub Feringa RBI knock to right to score Grace Chelemen. It was Feringa who would later score on a bases loaded hit by pitch RBI from Abby Darnley, who now has a pinch-hit RBI in consecutive games
Rice retired nine of the final 12 batters she faced to seal the two-run victory for the Herd.
UP NEXT
Marshall returns to Sun Belt Conference play with a trip to Myrtle Beach against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The three-game set is scheduled to begin on Friday at 6 p.m.
