Barboursville native broke the school record at UVA last weekend
NEW ORLEANS – Marshall University men's track and field senior Brett Armbruster has been named the Sun Belt Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row, and for the third time this season.
Armbruster broke a record held since 1999 in the men's outdoor 800. His 1:48.82 broke a record set by James Kneeland, 24 years ago (1:49.31).
"I'm really excited for Brett," Head Cross Country Coach and Track and Field assistant Caleb Bowen said. "He ran a really good race down there at UVA, it was the first opportunity for him to be paced by a big group who were all running around the same pace, he had a good group to roll with and that is really what got him under the record!"
Eight different Herd track and field athletes have set at least one school record in the 2022-23 season. Armbruster became the first men's athlete to do so in the program's return season.
"It's truly really special," Bowen added. "The women have been doing it forever now, and that always makes it special, almost like it has become an expectation, like 'we're going to go after these records.' Now, we can share that same mentality with the men's team, as they haven't had a team since 2004, so we can change the mindset from 'can we?' to 'we expect to do it' and this first record is the first step in that."
