Marshall Softball Faces Coastal Carolina in SBC Quarterfinals Thursday

Single elimination tournament crowns Sun Belt Champion
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team, after finishing the regular season with a 43-9 record and the No. 2 seed, will face the No. 7 seed Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers advanced to the quarterfinals after its 4-2, 10-inning win over Southern Miss in the opening round Wednesday.

PREGAME NOTES
- Marshall has had a historic season in its first year in the Sun Belt Conference, winning 43 games, the most in program history. Among other milestones in 2023, Coach Megan Smith Lyon's Herd knocked off a ranked opponent for the first time in 15 years and set a new record with 23 consecutive wins.Â
- A league-leading five members of the Thundering Herd won All-Conference First Team honors Tuesday. Sydney Bickel, Grace Chelemen, Alex Coleman, Sydney Nester, and Autumn Owen all received honors, with Bickel earning Conference Newcomer of the Year.Â
- Nester and Owen both had the distinction of being the Pitching and Batting Triple Crown winners of the conference. Nester led the league in wins (25), strikeouts (218), and ERA (1.08). Owen finished as the conference leader in average (.470), home runs (19), and runs batted in (70).

ABOUT THE CHANTICLEERS
- The No. 7 seed Coastal Carolina advanced to Thursday's quarterfinal after a dramatic three-run home run by Delaney Keith in the 10th inning to win, 4-2.Â
- Coastal featured two All-Conference members in leadoff hitter Diamond Williams, and designated player Iyanla De Jesus.
- Marshall and Coastal met in Conway in April, with the Herd winning two of three in the weekend series.Â
