Historic Herd Wins Regular Season Finale to Set All-Time Wins Record

5/6/2023 3:00:00 PM | Softball

Marshall sweeps Georgia Southern, heads to tournament with two-seed.

STATESBORO, Ga. — In a season where so many milestones have been achieved for Coach Megan Smith Lyon's Thundering Herd, it was only fitting that on the regular season's final day that the team set the record for most wins in a single-season.

The Herd defeated Georgia Southern, 8-1 to sweep the weekend series, and go into the Sun Belt Tournament with a 43-9 record (17-5 SBC).

"Wow, what a season," Smith Lyon said. "The reason we've won 43 games is the 18 girls on our roster. These young women are amazing. They have completely bought into the Marshall Way. They represent Marshall extremely well. They love the school. They fight for the 75. They give their all every day and I am so excited and so proud of them."

A five-run 2nd sealed the game for the historic Herd, with RBI knocks from Bri Godfrey, Alex Coleman, and Rielly Lucas

For Godfrey - the freshman from Deerfield Beach, Fla. - it was her first career runs batted in with a one-out triple down the right field line to open the scoring. Godfrey scored on Coleman's single who scored on the two-out Lucas knock.

Pitcher Sydney Nester finished the regular season the way she opened, and did so on many occasions in between, earning a win in the circle. Nester finished with 11 strikeouts in the complete-game, one run victory.

43 wins are the most in Marshall softball's 30-year history. On three previous occasions, the Herd had surpassed 40 wins - 2003, 2017, and 2019. But never before has MU softball reached the number 43, even with postseason games factored in.
