HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The fourth-ranked Marshall Men's Soccer team (9-1-3, 4-0-2 SBC) secured a key three points in a 4-1 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles (5-4-4, 1-3-2 SBC) Wednesday night at Hoops Family Field.
"It felt a little bit like the Stanford goal from the NCAA Tournament last year. It was like come from nothing, second, third ball, then volleyed into the top corner," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said about the goal his team had to comeback from. "We stuck to the gameplan and kept it going. We had no worries. We were attacking very well."
Georgia Southern got on the board first with a goal from Kevin Pierre in the 14th minute of the contest.
However, at the 24:56 mark The Herd was awarded a penalty kick on an Eagle handball. Rai Pinto stepped up to the penalty spot for the third time this season. Pinto remained perfect on penalty kicks sending the ball into the right side of the net to tie the match 1-1.
MU didn't wait long to strike again as Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos saw the ball bounce to his feet off a GS defender and finding the back of the goal in the 46th minute. The senior's team-leading sixth goal of the season made it 2-1 as the team's went into halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, Takahiro Fujita had the ball just outside the 18-yard box. The defender dished the ball off to Aymane Sordo, who beat the Georgia Southern keeper for his third goal of the season to make it 3-1.
Then in the 56th minute, Haruhi Taneda sent a cross into the box and an Eagle defender deflected it into the box for an own goal to make 4-1 Herd.
Aleksa Janjic, who earned his seventh win of the season, made a save in the 65th minute to help MU maintain its three-goal lead and cruise to the win.
Marshall outshot Georgia Southern 13-3, including 6-2 in shots on goal.
