HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (9-7, 0-3 SBC) fell in its home Sun Belt Conference Opener in three sets (27-25, 25-17, 25-18) to the Georgia Southern Eagles (11-1, 1-0 SBC) on Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
"We created opportunities, we just didn't execute on those," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said after the match. "I think the moments were there. They picked us a part pretty good. We just didn't respond well enough for it."
Beatrice Ciccarelli and Audrey Geer each finished with a team-high 11 kills as Brynn Brown recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.
The first set was hotly contested seeing the scoreboard tied 16 times and having eight lead changes. With the score tied 21-21 late in the set, the two sides traded the next eight points to see the score tied 25-25. The Eagles then used a service ace and a kill to take the opening frame in extra points 27-25.
The Herd found itself down 19-12 deep into the second set. However, a 4-1 run brought Marshall within four points, 20-16, with run the being finished off by a Geer kill and a GS attacking error. Georgia Southern held off Marshall's comeback to take the set 25-17.
MU battled in the third but couldn't get on top of the Eagles in the third. GS recorded a match-high 17 sets in the eventual final set taking it 25-18.
