Herd Swimming and Diving Finishes Day 1 of Dual Against Buffalo

Marshall takes seven of the nine events on day one

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team closed out day one of its dual against Buffalo with some big results.
"Competing at home is always special and we saw a lot of people step up today," Herd Swimming and Diving Head Coach Ian Walsh said. "The 400 Medley Relay really set the tone for the session. It was the 10th fastest time in program history and Kseniia's (Luniushina) 100 Back lead-off was a pool record by over 1.5 seconds and the third fastest time in program history."
The Herd opened the meet with a victory in the 400 Medley Relay with Kseniia Luniushina, Paige Banton, Madeline Hart and Audrey West finishing in 3:47.10, the 10th-fastest time in program history with Luniushina's leadoff backstroke split of 54.10 being third-fastest 100 Backstroke in program history and set a Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium record.
MU then swept the 1000 Freestyle podium with Eszter Laban (10:21.80), Preslava Tosheva (10:31.03) and Federica Savoia (10:35.37) finishing first through third. The Herd also swept 200 Breaststroke with Jenna Bopp (2:19.75), Paige Banton (2:19.89) and Maddy Akin (2:24.20) taking the top three spots.
Laban also won the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:23.89 as Luniushina took 100 Butterfly in 56.57 and Madeline Hart coming out on top in the 50 Freestyle (24.17).
"Coming off of our close loss to Duquesne, we talked about putting together well executed races/dives and not let the emotions of competition influence our approach to this meet," Walsh said. "The women did a great job of competing and staying in their lane, especially in close races. Our distance group had a great 1000, top to bottom. Eszter won two individual races, out touching Bella Forsman in the 400 IM by .10. That was one of the most exciting races I've witnessed here at home. All our relays were really sharp and was pleased with our adjustments in our relay exchanges."
The Herd closed out the day with a victory from Luniushina, Hart, Parker Lynch and Mia McBride (1:34.91) in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
"Tomorrow morning will be a good challenge for us with the early start time," Walsh said. "Our staff is really proud of what we saw tonight and look forward to carrying that momentum into day two."
