HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The eighth-ranked and second-seeded Marshall Men's Soccer team (10-1-6) used three second-half goals to rally past the seventh-seeded Old Dominion Monarchs (7-8-2), 3-2, in the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
"It's survive and advance time of the year, which is what we did," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I think we played very well in spurts. I think handling the emotions after such a big game against WVU. Obivously we didn't get the result we wanted with the tie, but I think the performance was fantastic. You put a lot into that and then there's such a quick turnaround. ODU has probably been our two most difficult games here of the season. ODU caused us some problems. Very proud we got through it and figured it out."
The Herd trailed 1-0 at halftime after ODU's Noah Madrigal tallied the first goal of the contest in the 35th minute.
The score remained 1-0 Monarchs until a handball was called in the 75th minute on the visitors. Pablo Simon stepped up to the spot and buried the attempt into the right side of the net past ODU goalkeeper Michael Statham to even the match 1-1.
The Herd were quick to strike again. Joao Roberto, who was subbed on after the first goal, fired a shot off the crossbar in the 78th minute. The ball quickly ricocheted off Loic Sany Kong and back to Roberto outside the 18-yard box. Roberto let off another shot with this one finding the back of the twine to make it 2-1 Marshall.
MU kept up the offensive pressure. At about the 86:26 mark, Sany Kong had attempt saved at the left post by Statham. The ball went to Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos who crossed it into Rai Pinto. Pinto directed the ball into the net with 3:32 left in the game to make it 3-1. The tally was his fourth off the season after going 3-for-3 from the penalty spot in the regular season.
ODU's Evan Watt scored a goal at the 87:15 mark, but the Green and White held off the Monarchs for the 3-2 victory.
Goalkeeper Dan Rose earned his third win of the season, making three saves in the victory.
Marshall outshot ODU 14-11, including 7-5 in shots on goal, and had seven corners to the Monarchs two.
