HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With a 1-0 shutout of the James Madison Dukes (8-5-6) on Wednesday night at Hoops Family Field, the eighth-ranked and second-seeded Marshall Men's Soccer team (11-1-6) is headed to the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Championship game on Sunday.
Marshall will take on the No. 10 ranked and top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers after its 2-1 win over the Kentucky Wildcats Wednesday night in Morgantown.
"I think we played really well," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "You could the passes were there. The gameplan was going to work, we just had to settle down into the game and execute final passes. We had some fantastic chances."
The difference in the game came off a shot by Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos in the 36th minute. The senior's rocket deflected off the head of a Dukes defender and into the net for an own goal.
Marshall's defense stepped up and stifled JMU's offense holding the visitors to just two shots with none finding the target as Aleksa Janjic registered his eighth win of the year and fifth clean sheet.
MU nearly got a second goal late in the first half as Loic Sany Kong and Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos had back-to-back shots saved by JMU keeper Sebastian Conlon in the 44th minute.
Conlon also saved a pair of attempts by Alexander Stjernegaard and another by Pablo Simon in the contest.
The Herd outshot the Dukes 9-2, including 5-0 in shots on target.
