Marshall’s Mike Green Named Defensive Player of Year By CFN, HERO

Green earns All-American First-Team Honors; Roberts, Moten also named All-Americans
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall defensive lineman Mike Green was named as College Football Network's EDGE Defender of the Year and HERO's G5 Defensive Player of the Year, it was announced on Thursday.
Green was named as a First-Team All-American by both entities, as well, while teammates J.J. Roberts and Josh Moten also earned All-American accolades.
Green, the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, helped lead Marshall to a 10-3 record and the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Championship, leading a defense that put on their best showing in the championship – a 31-3 win at Louisiana.
The Williamsburg, Virginia, native has put together one of the best seasons in Marshall and Sun Belt Conference history.
His 17.0 sacks broke the Sun Belt Conference's single-season sacks record and tied Marshall's single-season record while leading all FBS players in 2024.
In addition to sacks, Green led all FBS players in the following categories: sack yardage (144), tackles for loss (22.5), TFL yardage (155) and tackles by a defensive lineman (84).
Defensive back J.J. Roberts joined Green as an All-American, earning a place on the HERO G5 All-American Second Team Defense for his play in 2024.
The Ona, W.Va., native finished second on Marshall's team with 94 tackles, which included a team-best 50 solo tackles. Roberts added 5.0 tackles for loss, an SBC-best 14 pass breakups, a sack, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.
Roberts was the only player in the Sun Belt this season to earn Player of the Week accolades in two different categories, winning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30 after notching 15 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in the win over Western Michigan before later earning SBC Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 18 for his field goal block that was returned for a touchdown in a win over Coastal Carolina.
Roberts' 14 pass breakups were tied for No. 2 nationally and helped him earn 2024 All-SBC First Team accolades.
Roberts and Moten were also named as College Football Network All-American Honorable Mention selections for their performances in 2024.
Moten's five interceptions tied for No. 3 in FBS and tied for No. 1 in the Sun Belt while he added 38 tackles and another five pass breakups.
