Junior from Florida fires a final round 70 to finish tied atop the leaderboard
LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Marshall's Emily McLatchey fired her second consecutive round under par, shooting a 1-under 70 to finish the tournament at 1-under-par, tied atop the leaderboard at the Atlantic Invitational at Fountains Country Club on Tuesday.
Due to travel schedules, McLatchey and Arkansas State's Madison Tenore went to a one-hole playoff to determine individual medalist honors, which Tenore won.
McLatchey's effort was part of a big day for the Herd, who also got a strong finish from Kasey McIlvaine, who finished tied for fourth in the event.
"What a great day for the Herd!" Marshall Women's Golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "Emily played great this week and I am glad she's seeing the hard work pay off. Kasey played really good golf for us as well."
McLatchey finished with five birdies on the day and led the field in the category with 13 in the three-round event. No other competitor had more than nine. McLatchey was also the only golfer in the field to average below par on par-4 holes.
In addition to McLatchey's round on Tuesday, Marshall got a 1-under 70 from Olivia Kochan with the sophomore netting 15 pars to go with two birdies and one bogey in a clean round to close the tournament.
Kochan's 70 gave Marshall the distinction of being the only competing school with two rounds below par on the final day. There were only three total rounds under par in the final round.
"We saw improvement today as a team and to see rounds under par is always a plus," Burkhammer said. "I was excited to see Olivia with an under-par round today, too. Overall, there are lots to things to build on as we prepare for the Phoenix event soon."
Marshall also got strong performances from Hanna Shrout and Madison Borders, who improved their scores from Monday's rounds by at least five strokes to finish with a 74 and 76 respectively.
Marshall's Women's Golf team now takes off until Feb. 27 when the team heads to Phoenix, Arizona, for the GCU Invitational.
