Marshall Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

Herd finishes ECU Pirate Clash Sunday at 10 a.m.
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Marshall's softball team (5-4) split a doubleheader Saturday at the ECU Pirate Clash.
The Herd opened the day with a win over Longwood before falling to the unbeaten hosts, East Carolina.
First Game: Marshall 6, Longwood 2
The Herd stayed patient against the Lancers, scoring six unanswered runs in the victory.
Three of Marshall's runs came on sacrifice flies, including a pair of run-producing at-bats from Rielly Lucas. Lucas now has a team-high 10 runs batted in. The Huntington native's sac fly to center scored Sydney Bickel to bring back the first run in the 1st. Kasia Parks and Bickel lead the Herd in runs scored (nine and eight respectively). Bickel brought in Parks with her own sac fly to tie the game in the 3rd.
Brooklyn Ulrich put MU in front with an RBI double in the 5th. Ulrich had two more knocks Saturday after collecting five hits on Friday, including the tying knock against the Lancers in that win.
While Coach Morgan Zerkle's team took charge offensively, Savannah Rice settled down in the circle, picking up a complete-game victory, allowing just four hits with three strikeouts. Rice has four victories in 2024.
Freshman Destiny Washington's 6th inning RBI hit was the freshman's first of her Marshall career.
Second Game: ECU 13, Marshall 1 (5 innings)
East Carolina remained unbeaten in 2024, winning its ninth in a row to start the season. The Pirates scored 10 in the 1st inning and three more in the 3rd.
Marshall scored its run with an RBI double from Bickel. The Herd's leadoff hitter has a team-high 11 hits this season.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Herd.
