Marshall Softball Opens Conference Play With Home Series Against Georgia Southern

Three game series scheduled to begin Friday at Dot Hicks Field

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University softball (14-11) begins play against Sun Belt Conference competition when the Georgia Southern Eagles (16-7) come to Huntington.

The three game series from Dot Hicks Field is scheduled to begin under the lights at 6 p.m. Friday night. Saturday afternoon is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the series finale set for noon Sunday.

PREGAME NOTES

  • Marshall enters conference play hitting .320 as a team, the fourth-best in the SBC. Senior Sydney Bickel is batting .429 with 33 hits from the leadoff spot. 
  • Junior Bub Feringa is getting the job done at the plate and in the circle. Following five innings of shutout pitching Tuesday, Feringa is 6-3 on the season with a 2.72 ERA. She is also hitting .381 on the year with eight doubles. 
  • The Herd welcomed itself into the strong Sun Belt Conference last year with a 17-5 record, being the de facto eastern division champions. 

ABOUT THE EAGLES

  • Georgia Southern is 16-7 this season, with a top win coming over USF last month. In that same weekend, the Eagles took 2023 NCAA Tournament team Louisville to eight innings. 
  • The team's top hitter is a freshman from Statesboro, Delanie Thames. The infielder is hitting .371, just ahead of 2023 SBC Second-Team member Emma Davis (.358). 
  • Three pitchers have had strong starts to their seasons for the Eagles. Freshman righty Anslie Pettit has a 1.28 ERA in 71.1 innings pitched. The Georgia native threw a complete-game Wednesday in the team's win over College of Charleston.
