Herd Softball Dominates Sunday to Take Series Over Eagles

3/17/2024 3:52:00 PM | Softball

Michallas drives in five runs in the win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall softball (16-12, 2-1 SBC) opened its 2024 Sun Belt Conference slate with a series victory over Georgia Southern (17-9, 1-2 SBC). The Herd won the rubber match emphatically Sunday with a 9-1 victory over the Eagles at Dot Hicks Field.

Senior Camryn Michallas led the way offensively with five RBI, including a two-run home run to left field to give the Herd cushion in the 4th inning.

Marshall junior Bub Feringa had her best outing of the season, allowing just one hit over six innings of work in the win. Feringa was efficient with just 59 pitches thrown in the complete-game effort for Coach Morgan Zerkle's team.

"I think our ability to adjust was great," Zerkle said. "Bub pitched Friday and it was a way-better outing for her, she only gave up the one hit. For her to make those adjustments against the same team, it is good to have that trust in her."

"Same with our hitters, their pitcher gave us a little bit of trouble on Friday and we hit much better today. To see the team's ability to make adjustments through the weekend makes me feel a lot better to where if we do slip up, we can still take the series and be confident in our hitting, pitching, and defense."

Marshall opened the scoring in the 2nd on a two-out RBI infield single by Michallas to score Brooklyn Ulrich. Ulrich had two doubles on Sunday, with five hits total in the series.

After the Eagles' lone-run came in the 5th, Feringa helped her own cause in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to left before Michallas tacked on two more runs with a hit down the third-base line.

Bella Gerlach drove in two in the 6th before scoring on a GS error to provide the Herd an eight-run advantage to end the contest.
