HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Marshall University Baseball team (6-13, 0-3 Sun Belt) dropped the series finale on Sunday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, 7-5, to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (14-6, 0-3) on the opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play.
Â
"We came into a tough environment and played a really good ballclub, and played them all way," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the series. "All three games we played them tight. Certainly don't like the results from a win-loss standpoint, but I like where our ballclub is at and I like the growth that I'm seeing."
Â
At the dish Tre Hondras went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI as Cam Harthan registered a pair of singles in the contest.
Â
Marshall's first run of the ballgame came as AJ Havrilla scored on a Kebler Peralta groundout in the bottom of the fifth, followed by Elijah Vogelsong bringing home Calin Smith with a single in the sixth to tie it 2-2.
Â
In the ninth down 7-2, Peralta doubled home Vogelsong with Hondras bringing home Harthan and Peralta with a double as the comeback fell short.
