Herd Softball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader Under the Lights

Marshall closes weekend against Purdue at 1 Sunday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall's softball team put on a show in its first-ever games under the lights at the current Dot Hicks Field. The Herd (11–8) avenged its loss Friday in an 11-3 win over Butler before shutting out Radford, 5-0.

Bella Gerlach's three-run home run in the 5th set off the strobe lights to end the opener with a win. A pair of long balls from Camryn Michallas in game two sealed the Herd's second shutout of the year, backing strong pitching from Bub Feringa and Kaleea Washington.

Marshall shut out its opponents over the final nine innings of total game play Saturday.

First Game: Marshall 11, Butler 3 (5 Innings)

Gerlach singled in the opening run in the Herd's two-run 1st. The sophomore from Corydon, Indiana has seven on the weekend at the end of games Saturday.

In the circle, Feringa and Washington combined to work through the Bulldog offense. Washington earned her fourth-win while limiting BU to three earned runs. In relief, MU's utility pitcher got the Herd out of a jam in the 3rd with the go-ahead run in scoring position to keep Coach Zerkle's side in front, 4-3.

Seven unanswered runs including productive at-bats from Sydney Bickel and Reagan Glanz aided in providing insurance before Gerlach's three-run home run ended the game in the 5th.

Second Game: Marshall 5, Radford 0

Home runs by Michallas started and capped Marshall's offense in game two. The Huntington native drove in three Saturday with four hits on the weekend.

Brooklyn Ulrich and Rielly Lucas drove in separate runs while Feringa helped out her own cause with an RBI groundout in the team's three-run 3rd.

Feringa pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three. The junior let just one runner in scoring position after navigating out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the 1st.
