Herd Softball Comes Up Short Friday Night

HUNTINGTON, W.Va — In a pitchers' duel Friday evening, the Herd softball team (17-17, 3-5 SBC) came up on the wrong end of a big two-out hit to ULM (21-14, 4-4 SBC) in a 3-1 scoreline.

In a game separated by slim margins, the Herd's 0-for-7 night with runners in scoring position loomed large. In contrast, Herd starter Savannah Rice limited the Warhawks to 1-of-9 with RISP, but the visitors had the big hit with two outs in the 5th.

The Herd led off the game with Bella Gerlach hitting her team-leading ninth home run of the season to center. Friday's game was the first time Gerlach hit in the leadoff spot in her collegiate career.

Marshall had opportunities to capitalize with bases loaded and one out later in the 1st, but could not convert. MU stranded all seven runners in scoring position in the first four innings.

In the circle, Rice went five-plus, allowing six hits and just three runs while striking out two. The senior nearly escaped the 5th inning jam unscathed, but a two strike, two out single scored two to put the Warhawks up 2-1. Junior Bub Feringa entered in relief following a ULM solo shot in the 6th. Feringa pitched the final two innings of scoreless relief.
