Pair of Even-par 72s highlight first round at True Blue Golf Club
PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Marshall senior Tyler Jones shot an Even-par 72 to lead the Thundering Herd's team in the first round of the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate at True Blue Golf Club in Pawley's Island, South Carolina.
In addition to Jones' contributions on the team side, senior Andrew Wyss also shot a 72 while playing as an individual on what proved to be a tough day at True Blue Golf Club.
"We didn't score very well today," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "I thought we hit the ball well, but we struggled on the greens. Hopefully, we can get the ball rolling a little better tomorrow."
Many of Marshall's team members struggled with putting on a day in which pin placements were tough as the tournament got underway.
Jones and Joseph Kalaskey led the way with three birdies each on the day, but they were hard to come by for the team as a whole.
One hole that all parties enjoyed was the par-3 No. 7 that played about 114 yards on Monday. Four of Marshall's six total golfers got birdies on the hole.
As friendly as No. 7 was for the Herd, however, No. 8 took the momentum right back as five of the Herd golfers had bogeys on what proved to be an up-and-down day.
Competing as an individual, Wyss had the most level day of any of Marshall's golfers, firing a 1-under on his first nine before having a birdie and a pair of bogeys on his final nine to settle in at Even-par.
Kalaskey also turned in a solid round with a 1-over 73 while Ryan Bilby and Clayton Thomas each finished at 3-over 75 on day one.
Marshall returns to action on Tuesday morning with second round tee times scheduled for 7:55 a.m.
