MADISON, Miss. – Marshall's Men's Golf team is currently tied for third place after Day One of the 2024 Sun Belt Championship at Annadale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
Ryan Bilby led the Herd on the first day, carding a 1-over 73 on his day to be in a tie for 7th place. Teammates Tyler Jones and Joseph Kalaskey posted rounds of 3-over 75 to also sit in the top-20 after the first day of competition.
"The guys really played well today," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "I really liked the way the guys bounced back from adversity all day. The course was tough and we got some bad breaks, but the guys kept fighting. We are definitely looking forward to tomorrow."
On a day when birdies were hard to come by, Bilby took advantage of the par-5s, birdieing all four at Annadale on Monday to move into contention.
Jones and Kalaskey used consistency throughout much of the day to stay within reach of the leaders.
After Jones fell to 3-over following a double-bogey on his fifth hole of the day, he rebounded well, going 1-under over his next 11 holes to steady things.
Kalaskey was similar in nature, earning a par on each of his first 12 holes of the day with the first nine being on the back of Annandale, which gave competitors fits throughout the day.
Clayton Thomas opened play with a 4-over 76 that included a pair of birdies and Cameron Jarvis started his tournament at 8-over, but had the team's lone birdie on a par-3 after scoring on No. 2 – a par-3 that plays 213 yards.
Marshall came into the day seeded No. 13 out of 14 teams in the Sun Belt, based on the SpikeMark rankings, which are put together by Clippd.
However, the Thundering Herd never wavered despite starting the competition on the back nine – the toughest portion of Annandale Golf Club.
Marshall consistently stayed in the upper echelon of the standings throughout the day, avoiding major mistakes and several hazards to put themselves in position to currently advance.
Tuesday will feature the second 18 holes of the 54-hole stroke play, which will be used to determine what four teams advance to Thursday's Match Play semifinals and championship.
Arkansas State currently leads the tournament, going Even par for the day while Troy is currently in 2nd place at 9-over – just two strokes ahead of the Herd.
