Four Herd T&F Athletes Qualify For NCAA Championships East First Round

First Round starts next Wednesday from Lexington, Kentucky
INDIANAPOLIS – Marshall track and field's Abby Herring, Kylee Mastin, Rebecca Merritt, and Tyra Thomas have made the mark for the 2024 NCAA DI Track and Field Championships East First Round, the NCAA announced Thursday.
The four athletes were among the Top-48 best marks in their respective events in the East Region, qualifying them for the Championship First Round next week from the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility in Lexington. The top-12 finishers among the First Round events, combined with the top-12 in the West Region will advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championship Finals starting June 5 from Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
For Herring, who qualified via the 10K, it will be the senior's first Track and Field Championships. The Parkersburg, West Virginia native qualified for the event when she set a school-record setting time of 33:08.07 at the Raleigh Relays in March. Her time enters as the 22nd-best in the East Region.
Mastin, the SBC 1500 meter Champion, qualified in the event in what will also be her first appearance in the First Round. Mastin's 1500 time of 4:19.49 from the Music City Challenge is a MU school record and is what qualifies the New Carlisle, Ohio native for the First Round.
Merritt will make her second-consecutive appearance at the First Rounds after qualifying last season in Discus. The SBC Silver-medalist in the event qualified with a near record-setting throw of 52.00 meters at the Music City Challenge in April. Merritt also made the cut for the Hammer Throw with a 58.14 meter mark at the FSU Relays. She will compete in both events next week.
Thomas will also be making her second-straight First Round appearance, again qualifying in the 100 meter hurdles. Thomas solidified her place when she tied the school record in the prelims of the SBC Championships with a time of 13.39. Thomas earned a bronze medal in the finals of the event. She co-holds the school record in outdoor track, while also holding the indoor 60 meter hurdles school record which she set in the 2022-23 season.
