HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Behind nine runs and a career-high 11 strikeouts from Bryce Blevins, the Marshall University Baseball team (15-31, 8-15 Sun Belt) captured the series over the Georgia State Panthers (22-26, 10-13 Sun Belt) with a 9-1 win at Jack Cook Field on Saturday night.
"It's a bounce-back outing for Bryce, he a tough outing there at Georgia Southern last weekend," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said about his starter's performance. "That first inning was huge because that brought the fire back in him. He left a guy stranded there in the first inning and put that zero up. Then we put six runs on the board the next two innings."
Blevins dazzled on the mound in his sixth quality start of the season. The sophomore's career-best 11 strikeouts came across 7.0 innings of work allowing just one run on four hits and a walk for his third win of the season.
"That's big, but I don't really focus much on the strikeouts," the lefty said about his career performance. "It's not a big thing that I do a lot, but I knew I was in the zone today. My job was to go out there and pound the ball in the zone, get weak outs and get us a win."
Out of the bullpen, Alex McKay hurled 2.0 hitless frames allowing no runs on two walks.
At the plate, Cam Harthan, Owen Ayers, Caden Kaiser and Ethan Murdoch all had multi-RBI games as each drove in a pair of runs in the ballgame. Ayers and Murdoch each hit homers as Ayers mashed his seventh and Murdoch blasted his second of the season.
Blevins got out of a jam in the first after giving up a one-triple and a walk. MU's offense took advantage as an Ayers sacrifice fly scored Cam Harthan the next half inning to give the home side the early lead.
Marshall blew the game open with a five-run second as Murdoch singled home Elijah Vogelsong, and Harthan reached on a fielder's choice to score Murdoch as Jack Firestone also crossed home on a Panther's error. Kaiser closed out the inning with a two-run single to score Harthan and Jack Smith.
The Herd then tallied a run in the fifth on Murdoch's homer, a run on Ayers' longball in the sixth and a single through the right side by Harthan to score Tre Hondras in the seventh.
