No. 8 Herd Men’s Soccer Named SBC Preseason Favorite, Three Named Preseason All-SBC

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 8 Marshall University Men's Soccer Team were picked as 2024 Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite in the Preseason Coaches Poll with Taimu Okiyoshi, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos and Marco Silva being named preseason all-conference, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The Herd is coming off an 18-win season that featured 12 shutouts, both program records, with winning both the SBC Regular Season and Tournament Championship.
Okiyoshi was named a United Soccer Coaches Third-Team All-American, United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-Southeast Region and All-Conference Second-Team in 2023. The midfielder played and started in all 21 of Marshall's matches, seeing a team-high 1,743 minutes on the pitch as a captain. Okiyoshi played a full 90 minutes in 11 matches tallied a goal at James Madison (Sept. 16) and registered assists in the 2023 SBC Championship against WVU (Nov. 12) and another against California Baptist (Nov. 19) in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Rodrigues dos Santos, a transfer from Memphis, was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-American Third Team, United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team, the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and All-AAC First Team as he sat atop the NCAA offensive leaderboard in 2023. The Brazilian tallied 33 points and 14 goals ranking sixth and seventh, respectively, in the nation with his eight game-winning goals leading the country.
Silva appeared in 17 matches, making 11 starts, while totaling seven goals and four assists in 864 minutes on the pitch. Silva tallied seven points with a hat trick and an assist against Wright State (Aug. 28) to be named the SBC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2. Silva also tallied a pair of goals against Cleveland State (Sept. 12) on a season-high five shots, with a season-high four on goal.
Marshall welcomes Winthrop for its Fans First Contest on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.
