Early Goal Downs Marshall Women’s Soccer

8/23/2024 8:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer

HANOVER, N.H. - Marshall outshot and out-possessed Dartmouth Friday evening for the final 88 minutes of the match, but a 2nd minute goal for the hosts ended up being enough to see out a 1-0 victory.

The Herd had 13 shots total, seven on target, in comparison to the eight total shots the hosts took.

"We leave proud tonight," Coach Rafa Simoes said. "This group is special. If you see how we play with possession, how we created many chances, I am proud of them. I told them how proud of the way we played and fought."

The Herd's best chance came in the final minute of each half.

In the waning moments of the opening half, junior Bailey Fisher took a free kick from a spot where she scored on three occasions last season from 30 yards out.

With a stopped clock reading eight seconds remaining in the first, Fisher's strike beat the keeper, going off the crossbar. Defender Maria Chaves would score off the ensuing deflection but not until after the clock hit all zeros.

In the final moments of the match, Marshall's Amelia Compston was brought down in an area deemed just outside the box and inches away from a potential match-tying penalty kick opportunity.

The loss is the Herd's first of the year, who falls to 0-1-1. With the result, Dartmouth wins its opening match of the season.

Goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth made three saves, including a pair of diving stops in the second half. But the home side's Daisy Granholm's goal in the 2nd was enough to stand for the match
