HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall cross country was ready for the 2024 opener - and the heat which came with it.

The Herd women won the 2024 Thundering Herd Invitational with a dominant 20 points, winning over the next closest team finisher, who scored 47 points.

Senior Kylee Mastin won the individual title with a time of 18:05. Junior Hannah Wyler finished second, with freshmen Ellie Hosaflook and Destiny Berryman rounding out the top-five. Asha Bora, Taylor Spencer, and Jalynn Browning all finished within the top-15 as well.

"We made it without any mishaps in the 98 degree heat with a heat index over 100," Head Coach Caleb Bowen said. "Credit to our Athletic Training, Facilities and EMT staff who kept athletes safe. You are always concerned about the athletes because it is such a hard sport and doing it in the extreme heat is just hard."

"I like what I saw with the women, we had a 1:05 split between our top and fifth runner, so that is really good," Bowen said. "Kylee [Mastin] had a great day and we have such a close group, I think this group has a chance to be special."

The men's team saw just two of the same top seven who scored at the 2023 Thundering Herd Invitational place on Friday. The squad was led by sophomore Garrett Ferguson with a top-five finish and a time of 15:32. Freshman Justin Lipscomb also placed in the top-10, finishing four seconds later to get eighth. The team finished second with 55 points.

"The men's side for being so young, we competed well," said Bowen. "I thought Garrett [Ferguson] and Justin [Lipscomb] closed strong. Kazuma [Bowring] had a good race, Brady [Dawkins] had a great meet. We had some guys battling sickness and injury so some people did not run and others ran not at full strength. But overall, we are pretty excited with our start to the season."
