HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 8 Marshall University Men's Soccer Team begins its Sun Belt Conference Championship title defense from 2023 in 2024 with three preseason contests, starting Saturday at No. 2 Notre Dame. Marshall is coming off an 18-win season that featured 12 shutouts, both program records.
After the exhibition with the Irish, MU travels to NIU for an exhibition on August 13 before concluding the preseason with the team's Fans First game on August 17 at 1 p.m. against Winthrop at Hoops Family Field.
The Herd returns 16 student-athletes from the 2023 season. One of those returners is Taimu Okiyoshi, who is coming off a season that saw him earn a second-team all-SBC nod in addition to being a United Soccer Coaches third-team All-American and first-team all-Southeast Region.
Pablo Simon and Marco Silva are the team's returning leading scorers with each tallying seven goals. Simon is the leading returner in points at 21 as he notched seven assists to go with his seven goals.
MU welcomes 11 newcomers to the side, including Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos. Rodrigues dos Santos transferred to Huntington from Memphis. In 2023, he ranked sixth in the nation with 33 points and seventh in goals with 14. He was the 2023 AAC Offensive Player of the Year, first-team all-AAC, on the United Soccer Coaches first-team all-East Region and was a United Soccer Coaches third-team All-American honoree.
Marshall saw a few key departures to the professional ranks with Matthew Bell and Morris Duggan being taken in the MLS Draft in December by Real Salt Lake and Minnesota, respectively. Alvaro Garcia-Pascual signed with La Liga side Sevilla in July with Gabriel Perrotta went to USL Championship side Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Adam Aoumaich signing with Union Omaha in USL League One.
