Aber currently tied for 7th; Herd in 5th after difficult first day of action
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Marshall's Men's Golf team fought weather and difficult course conditions on the first day of the River Run Collegiate at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.
Monday's scheduled 36 holes of play was shortened to 18 holes as torrential downpours moved into the area and saturated the playing surface at River Run.
"Weather was definitely a factor today," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "The wind was blowing 15 to 30 miles per hour and it was raining. We just got through the first round when they had to call it. The guys really played well today and battled hard. We had a couple mistakes that cost us and we didn't convert enough around the greens."
Marshall's J.F. Aber led the Thundering Herd, shooting a 1-over 73 after notching three birdies, including one on No. 8 that moved him into the top-10 at round's end. Currently, Aber is tied for 7th and just two shots out of the lead.
Herd senior Ryan Bilby is just one shot back of Aber and in the top-15, as well, after a 2-over 74 in which the veteran Herd golfer fought off a triple-bogey on his first hole of the day to go under-par over his final 17 holes.
Clayton Thomas also overcame early issues – a triple-bogey on his second hole and a double-bogey on his third hole, to see success on Monday. Over his final 15 holes, Thomas had 14 pars and one birdie – that coming on the par-5 18th hole.
Joseph Kalaskey and Cameron Jarvis each finished at 6-over 78 on Monday, as did Andrew Wyss, who was competing as an individual.
Marshall is currently in 5th place after one round of play in the tournament, but is only eight strokes out of first place.
The second round of competition was canceled and there will be one round of 18 holes to end the 2024 River Run Collegiate. Tuesday's final round action is scheduled to start at 9 a.m, weather permitting.
