Marshall Women’s Soccer Draws at GSU in SBC Opener

9/22/2024 10:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Fisher tallied first goal of the season

ATLANTA, Ga. – Thanks to a second-half goal from Bailey Fisher and four saves from Alexis Wolgemuth, the Marshall University Women's Soccer Team (2-3-2, 0-0-1 SBC) opened Sun Belt action with a 1-1 draw at Georgia State on Friday night.

Fisher's equalizer in the 84th minute, her first goal of the season, came on a header off a cross from Katie Porter.

"I think we didn't the start game well," Herd Women's Soccer Head Coach Rafa Simoes said. "We made some mistakes, and they punished us for it. Credit to Georgia State for being a good team and hard to beat at home. The changes we made at halftime helped us do what we needed to do. It brought us closer to our identity. Keeping the ball, crediting chances and Bailey scoring her first goal of the season. We had some chances to win late in the second half, but the point today was a positive way to start conference play. Now we prepare for a tough Texas State team."

The Panthers opened the scoring with goal from Emily Glenn in the 12th minute on the first shot of the game.

Wolgemuth then made a save in the 24th minute to keep the deficit at 1-1 stopping GSU's next shot.

Kajsa Ekstrom and Fisher each had a shot on target in the 30th and 31st minutes, respectively, but the attempts were saved by the Georgia State keeper.

Fisher's goal then came on the team's fourth shot on target of the contest came of a perfect cross from Porter, who earned her first assist of the season.

Wolgemuth then made three saves in the final 11 and half minutes to keep the Panthers off the board and earn the road point for The Herd.

Marshall was outshot 12-10 but had more shots on goal with six to GSU's five. Fisher led MU with three shots and two on target.
