Herd Tennis Secures Perfect Home Weekend with 6-1 Win Over Bellarmine

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (4-0) extended its perfect start to the season with a 6-1 home win over the Bellarmine Knights at the 7827 Tennis Center on Sunday.
"I'm really excited with how we played at the top of the lineup today," Herd Tennis Head Coach John Mercer said. "Doubles was excellent and looked really good. JoJo (Strom), Emma (Vanderheyden) and Sophia (Hurrion) did a great job of coming out, getting ahead and staying with it at that point in singles. Looking forward to next weekend against Wake Forest. It'll be a good home match and hope people attend."
The Herd rolled the Knights in doubles. Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane started with a 6-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 with Emma Vanderheyden and Alina Mokrynskaya closing it out with a 6-3 win on at No. 1.
Marshall continued its momentum into singles. Strom quickly finished with a 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 1 as Vanderheyden followed at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Hurrion then clinched the match 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles to extend The Herd's winning streak to four straight matches to start the Spring.
The two sides played out the remaining singles matches seeing McGrane take her contest at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 7-5, and Van Hout closing the match at No. 6 in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
