HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (5-0) picked up a 4-3 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-2) to end their five-match win streak and remain perfect during the Spring on Sunday at the 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.
Â
"We played a great match. Especially, after serving opportunities to win the doubles point that we let get away from us," Herd Tennis Head Coach Jonh Mercer said after the win. "I saw a lot of good character from our seniors, who really fought hard along with JoJo to comeback, get off to a good start and played well from the beginning until the end. I'm really proud of how they handled it. We were able to keep moving on from the adversity throughout the match."
Â
The Herd dropped the doubles point with WF taking a pair of contests at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane saw their match go unfinished at No. 2 as they were tied 6-6 and in a tiebreaker against the No. 44 ranked pairing of Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum.
Â
The duo carried their strong doubles play into singles. McGrane finished first at No. 5 singles to tie the match with a 6-3, 6-4, win in straight sets. Hurrion quickly followed at No. 4 with a triumph by the same scoreline to give MU a 2-1 lead.
Â
Then at No. 2 singles, Emma Vanderheyden rallied to a 6-3, 6-4, victory for Marshall's third straight singles win of the match.
Â
The Herd took the contest with a win at No. 1 Singles from Johanna Strom. The native of Sweden took the first set 6-2 before falling 6-3 in the second. The junior rallied with a dominant 6-1 performance in the third to take her contest and seal the victory for MU.
