Marshall Earns Gritty 0-0 Draw at South Alabama Behind Defensive Stand

MOBILE, Ala. – Marshall (6-4-3) battled to a 0-0 draw at South Alabama on Friday night, holding the Sun Belt Conference perennial contenders scoreless at The Cage.
With the result, Marshall remains unbeaten in its last two outings and collects a valuable conference point on the road. The Herd is now 2-2-3 in Sun Belt action with nine points in a close SBC table.
Marshall leaned on sophomore goalkeeper Emma Durand, who delivered three key saves to preserve the clean sheet. South Alabama entered the match with a 7-1 home record and nine goals in three conference home games, but the Herd defense—anchored by senior Kajsa Ekstrom and Angel Fowler—stood tall throughout the 90 minutes.
Marshall weathered heavy early pressure as the Jaguars registered three shots and a corner in the opening 10 minutes, but Durand and the back line kept the hosts at bay. The Herd saw its best work in the second half, recording six of its nine shots after the break. Midfielder Marcella Alves was the primary offensive catalyst, firing four shots (three on goal) and testing the South Alabama keeper throughout.
A pivotal moment came in the 55th minute, when Durand turned aside a close-range effort from Andrea Iljkic to maintain the stalemate. In the closing stages, Fowler had a late chance in the 89th minute but missed wide, ensuring the match finished scoreless.
Bailey Fisher contributed two shots on goal from midfield, while Fowler finished with three shots and played the full match on the back line. Marshall was outshot 10-7 overall, but both teams forced their opposing keepers into crucial stops - South Alabama finished with six saves to the Herd's three.
With the result, Marshall remains unbeaten in its last two outings and collects a valuable conference point on the road. The Herd is now 6-4-3 overall and 2-2-3 in Sun Belt action.
