STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University volleyball team (9-7, 1-2 SBC) picked up a crucial 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 15-12) road win over Georgia Southern (11-3, 2-1 SBC) on Friday in the team's 2025 road Sun Belt Conference opener in Statesboro, Georgia.
"Extremely proud of this group," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said after the win. "We served tough out of the gate. It wasn't pretty at times but our defense held us down from a blocking presence. Both Emma Sayre and Barnett were huge for us in the back row, nothing was dropping between the two. Just such a team win, to be able to fluctuate into the 6-2 and 5-1, not one person wavered. Just a gritty win against a sound Georgia Southern team."
Beatrice Ciccarelli anchored the Herd attack with 15 kills, a .303 hitting percentage and six blocks. Elli Barry added 10 kills and three blocks, while Bella Thompson distributed 36 assists and picked up 11 digs. Emma Barnett posted a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs, including the match-clinching kill in the fifth set. Marae Reilly finished with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
Marshall built a five-point advantage before Georgia Southern mounted a rally, but the Herd closed the opening frame 25-22 on a kill by Carys Kerr.
Marshall took control late, capitalizing on a key attack error by Georgia Southern's Reagan Barth to claim the set 25-20 and extend the match lead to 2-0.
Georgia Southern responded in the third, pulling away late for a 25-17 victory. The Eagles continued their surge in the fourth with a 25-21 win and force a decisive fifth set.
Both sides traded momentum in a tense finale. Marshall broke through at 14-11 on a block assist from Ciccarelli and Barry, then sealed the win with Barnett's kill for the 15-12 victory.
The Herd finished with 10 team blocks and .261 hitting in the deciding set.
