HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 12-ranked Marshall Men's Soccer team (12-3-5) earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cleveland State in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer First Round Thursday night at Hoops Family Field.
Â
David de la Vibora tallied his fourth goal of the season, third game winner, as Eijin Magota registered his first win and clean sheet in his first collegiate start.
Â
"Congratulations to Cleveland State. They had a great season. Obviously, they won the Horizon League and they played some nice football today," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "For us, I thought we were excellent for the first 60 minutes, controlling the game, especially in the first half. I think we got to take sort of advantage of that and sort of make more of out of the chances we were creating. We create 11 shots in the first half there. I think we have to put away a few more of those to make it an easier night."
Â
Marshall struck for the match's only goal in the 28th minute, as de la Vibora finished a right-footed shot into the top right corner to give the Herd a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish. The early advantage allowed Marshall to dictate the pace, but Cleveland State challenged the Herd back line throughout the second half outshooting the home side 4-3 in the final 45 minutes.
Â
The closing stretch tested Marshall's composure and defensive discipline. Goalkeeper Magota delivered a pivotal save on Cleveland State's lone shot on target in sixth minute, his first career save, while the Herd's defenders blocked shots and cleared dangerous set pieces in the final ten minutes.
Â
Marshall outshot Cleveland State 14-6, including a 4-1 margin in shots on goal, and earned eight corner kicks compared to just one for the Vikings.
Â
NEXT UP
The Herd travels to Raleigh, North Carolina, for a Second-Round tilt against the 11th-ranked and 15th-seeded NC State Wolfpack at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
